Hi Tristan,
As far as I know, the FSDP are the only organisation offering grants specifically for disabled students. To be considered you must meet the following criteria:
Between 18 and 70 years of age
Weigh 115 kgs or below (230 lbs)
Registered disabled
Resident in the UK
Allowed to drive by the DVLA
I’m unsure exactly what is meant by ‘registered disabled’, as I do not believe there is such a register in the UK – but they may be referring to whether you can qualify for Disability Living Allowance, or a ‘blue badge’ for parking. As far as I know diabetes would only qualify under these if the condition had caused mobility/visual impairments.
You can read more about the criteria for the FSDP scholarships here: http://www.fsdp.co.uk/scholarships/
They do assess all applications on a case-by-case basis – so potentially you could explain how you feel a scholarship would benefit you.
I hope that helps.
Best of luck!
That’s great to hear Ian!
We should point out that the costs outlined above are for aeroplane flight training – you will find that the helicopter route is somewhat more expensive. This comes down to the fact that helicopters are more expensive to run in terms of fuel costs, as well as there being fewer helicopter instructors and so higher demand.
Having said all that there are some really great packages available and many aero clubs that will do their very best to support you on your journey towards that coveted pilots licence!
Best of luck!
Thanks for sharing, Ken!
A fantastic story and so encouraging to hear that with determination, anyone can get into the skies.
Hi Dafydd,
For young people looking to get into aviation, the air cadets is a fantastic route to take and can open up lots of opportunities for scholarships and other funding.
I’d strongly advise you to get in touch with you’re local Squadron – here’s their facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/pg/1092aircadets/about/?ref=page_internal
https://www.rafa.org.uk/what-we-do/air-cadets/flying-scholarships/ – this page details some of the scholarships you could have the opportunity to get access to.
Hope that helps! Happy Flying!
Hi Corinne,
That’s a great question.
While flying schools will always aim to make flying accessible for all, there is a basic safety requirement for most lessons that the student must have enough mobility to climb in and out of the cockpit unaided.
If you think you could do this then you should be able to take part in a standard flying lesson. You can find all the flying lessons in the South East England area by following the link below.
https://flyinglessons.co.uk/browse/?min_price=0&orderby=price&filter_region=268,267
Obviously, not everyone will be able to meet the mobility requirement for these standard lessons, but there are a number of organizations set up with the aim of increasing the accessibility of flying for pilots of all abilities. If you think you’ll need extra assistance, I’d highly recommend getting in touch with one of these:

I hope that helps.
Good luck, and happy flying!
